Happy February 2021!!!

If you’ve been around here for awhile, you already know that Black History Month is one of my favorite times of year to produce content. This year I’ll be focusing on finally finishing the rest of the Black History is American History curriculum for ages 7-12, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be producing free content for y’all either.

This year since we are all still virtual learning for the most part, I wanted to focus on creating some content that the entire family can do together to relax. What better way for everyone to relax than to do some coloring? I created four coloring pages to accompany four of my favorite children’s book that explore Black History.

You can download these coloring pages free of charge for personal use. Click on the images to download and print the coloring page.  Please do not mass reproduce them. If you want to share them with a friend, send them to my website, so that they can download them on their own. This post also contains affiliate links to Bookshop and Amazon.

Alright now that I’ve gotten all the legal stuff out of the way here is the book list and coloring page for each.

Ruth and the Green Book follows the story of a Black family taking a road trip from their home in the midwest to the South during Jim Crow. They learn about the Negro Traveler’s Guide also known as The Green Book while on their travels. The story is told by Ruth and I love that it centers what it’s like for a young child to discover segregation but also how resilient our people are no matter what obstacles we face.

Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-ins is based on the lunch counter sit-ins in Greensboro, NC. This book has been featured frequently on Mamademics because it is one of Sesame’s favorites. I’m not sure if it’s the chanting while they march that intrigues him but it’s the most requested book from him during Black History Month and the rest of the year. Personally, I love that once again we see the story through the eyes of a young child who is watching her older siblings engage in civil disobedience in order to change unfair laws.

Doctor Daniel Hale Williams in ‘Twas The Night of a Miracle follows Dr. Daniel Hale Williams as he performs the first successful open heart surgery. The story is told in a playful way and is sure to engage even the youngest among us. This book is on the list because it’s one of the favorites from a family on Patreon. I also loaned our copy to Blueberry’s preschool this year because I know his teachers will love reading it with them due to all of the rhyming that takes place.

Finally, Mae Among The Stars is a children’s look at the real life story of Dr. Mae Jemision, the first Black woman to travel to space. The beautiful imagery in this book makes it a favorite for most families, but it’s especially special to me because I’m obsessed with painting galaxies.
