How I Named My Kids... For The Internet
Whenever one of my blog posts goes viral, there are always several “concerned” parents asking me why I named my children Sesame and Blueberry. I’m using air quotes when I say concerned because honestly they’re usually being judgy assholes and deflecting from the topic at hand.
For starters, Sesame and Blueberry are NICKNAMES! They’re internet nicknames that I also affectionately call my children at home from time to time. I wanted to give them a little bit of privacy and it helps when we’re out in public because if someone recognizes them but only uses their internet names, they know it’s a “blog friend” versus mommy’s real-life friends.
I’m sure you’re wondering how I came up with these names and honestly, it’s not some elaborate fancy story. It’s actually quite simple…
When I found out I was pregnant with my first child, it was very early, as in I hadn’t even missed my period yet but I just felt really weird and since I used to be a bit neurotic about these things I kept pregnancy tests in my house. After freaking out, I went online and a website told me that the embryo was the size of a sesame seed. Since we knew it would be months before we found out the “gender” of our child, we decided to call the baby sesame instead of “it.” Once I started blogging and sharing my real name, I decided to call him Sesame online instead of Baby S.
Simple right?
When I found out I was pregnant with our second child, it was again very early. However, when we told Sesame that he was going to be a big brother, I read him what the app said about the baby. It just so happened that the app said the baby was the size of a blueberry. Because Sesame knew how he got his nickname, he said: “we should call the baby blueberry.” I laughed because I honestly hadn’t even begun to consider a blog nickname for the new little one, but it made sense.
So, now you know the answer to one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. Do you give your children internet pseudonyms? How did you come up with them?
