See the tiny human nestled next to me? Since Mid-July 2011 he has been the reason I don’t get to sleep quite as much as I would like. First, he kept me awake with heartburn and frequent trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night throughout most of my pregnancy. Then he was born and now he keeps me awake with late night diaper changes and frequent feedings. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love my tiny human, but he is the ultimate sleep killer. Even when I’m supposed to take a nap because he’s sleeping or hanging with his dad, I can’t because I’m too busy watching him sleep or do something new. Who else is going to make sure there is photographic evidence of every new thing he does? Not to mention that it never fails that as soon as I decide to close my eyes for longer than 5 minutes, Baby S will inevitably decide he absolutely needs to eat and I’m his food.
Baby S hasn’t always been the only reason I lose sleep. If you’ve followed my blog from the very beginning then you know that in addition to being a mom, I’m also a graduate student. This means I spend lots of late nights reading scholarly articles and attempting to write brilliant essays. I also spend quite a bit of time working on lesson plans and grading essays for the courses I teach during the academic year. I joked during pregnancy that both undergraduate and graduate school prepared me for motherhood. Having a newborn is a lot like midterms and finals week of undergrad, but on steroids.
I wonder how much sleep I’m going to get once school starts back this fall, and I’m not only a mommy but I’m also a student and a teacher. The only role that doesn’t seem to interfere with my sleep is being a wife, and judging by some of the other mommy bloggers I follow it’s only a matter of time before my husband finds a project for me as well.
What has you losing sleep right now?
