Someone I love voted for Trump and I am devastated.
In the 48 hours since I learned of this person’s choice, I’ve found myself feeling a range of emotions including anger, disappointment, betrayal, and shame.
I’m angry that someone I love could vote for a person who does not believe in human rights for all people. I am angry that they could so selfishly ignore the needs of others and vote for a white supremacist.
I am disappointed that someone I love voted for Trump because I thought I knew them better. I thought they understood the importance of choosing a well-qualified candidate who won’t spend the next 4 years creating policies that will linger for generations to come.
Was it because he was man? Could you just not see a woman leading the country?
I feel betrayed that someone I love could vote for a man who admittedly grabs women “by the pussy.” How can you love me yet support a man who objectifies and degrades women?
I feel shame that someone I love voted for Trump because it means that I failed. I failed at my duty to make sure that everyone close to me understood the detriment of a Trump presidency. How did I let this happen?
Someone I love voted for Trump and I’m not sure that I can ever look them in the eye again.
How am I supposed to break bread with a person who was able to overlook Trump’s racist, sexist, and xenophobic rhetoric?
Was his “tell it like it is” persona enough for you to ignore the fact that the KKK endorsed him?
How can I share a laugh with someone who was able to overlook Trump’s record of discrimination against Black people?
Was his stance on same-sex marriage enough for you to overlook his support of racial profiling people who look like you ?
How can I trust someone who was able to ignore the fact that Trump raped his first wife and has a history of assaulting women?
Was his pro-life stance enough for you to overlook his blatant disrespect and disregard for women?
Someone I love voted for Trump and I feel like a piece of my heart has been ripped out.
Someone I love voted for Trump and I no longer feel they will have my back.
Someone I love voted for Trump and I am devastated.
