Surviving The End of the Semester with Elephant Grocers

With two teachers in the house, the end of the year is always incredibly hectic in our home. Plus, the fact that I’m still not a licensed driver can make it every crazier when it comes to running errands and grocery trips. So, while coming up with  a Mamademics survival guide (more on that in a couple weeks), I started looking into home grocery delivery.  I came across Elephant Grocers (formerly Coldlife Organics) and decided to send them a message about working with them, and here we are.

I received a gift card to test out Elephant Grocers. All thoughts are my own.

I try to meal plan for the week and then create my grocery list based on what we need for those meals, as well as miscellaneous snacks. Since I was a bit unfamiliar with Elephant Grocers stock, I decided to sit down and check out their website first and then attempt to meal plan. I loved the fact that everything was organic, so I didn’t have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out if this was going to be a good purchase. Plus, I thought it was nice that they work with local farmers, so you know exactly where your meat was raised. I also really liked that they offer prepared foods as well because let’s face it who really wants to cook right after unpacking groceries.

I’ll admit that going through the website probably wasn’t the best idea because I of course spent way more time than I planned on browsing and kinda sorta defeated the purpose of online grocery shopping, but i know better for next time. Once I finished going through everything and came up with meal ideas for the week, I made a serious list and got started.  The actual grocery shopping took me about 30 minutes. Oh and because I was in the middle of end of the semester madness, I of course missed the 8 pm deadline for next day delivery, but next time I’ll make sure to order the groceries in the morning before all my caffeine has worn off.

Four nice sized boxes full of yummy food

On the day of the delivery, I wasn’t really sure what time they would come to my neighborhood, which was a tad bit nerve-wrecking. I kept thinking they would knock on the door while I was in the shower or in the middle of an art project with Sesame. Of course you don’t have to be home for the delivery and once I saw the insides of my boxes it all made sense.

It’s like a little mini freezer…

All my frozen items were safe in these insulated boxes w/ extra ice.

They also didn’t overpack things, so everything would still be cold if left outside for a little while.

Even though Elephant Grocers focuses on organic food, they do include a small frozen selection of “naughty” foods like these French Bread Pizzas from Stouffers.

And the produce came in these awesome insulated bags as well

Their prepared foods change each week, but I choose the Shepard’s Pie and Chicken soup. They were both easy to heat for later meals and were yummy. I’ve been using ground beef in my shephard’s pie, but Mr. S has requested ground lamb next time. Sesame loved the chicken soup, although I had to keep telling him that mommy didn’t make it since he seems to thik all homemade soups are made by mommy.

All in all my first experience with an online grocery delivery service went very well. We will definitely utilize them again and I hope they start including same day delivery for those of us who get a little forgetful and need food that day lol.

Be sure to check out Elephant Grocers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and let them know Mamademics sent you.
