Wait… What Exactly Does My Insurance Cover, Again?

If you follow Mamademics on Facebook, you know that I went to the eye doctor this past weekend. I was on my last pair of contacts and overdue for a contact and eye glass exam. I only ended up getting a contact exam because my eye insurance coverage said that I have to wait until next year for new glasses. Now I know it’s been two years since I got these glasses and so does the doctor’s office, but for some reason it kept saying 2015 in the system. I’ve been wearing glasses since the second grade, so I’m pretty familiar with the every two years new frames experience, but it looks like my insurance was a bit off that day.

If you only knew how thick my frames really are...

Part of this is my own fault since I didn’t go back and check our benefits after my husband re-enrolled us and updated things this past summer. I remember having a conversation with him where we sat down and looked through the pros and cons of HMO and PPO, and we paid close attention to what’s covered for pregnancy because we do want to have another munchkin in the future. I also remember us discussing the dental portion and being sure to add the tiny human because he’s almost three. For some reason he wasn’t automatically added when he was born and we spent hours at the dentist earlier in the year waiting only to be turned away. Mr. S claims he also talked to me about adding legal advice and fraud protection to our benefits, but I guess I zoned out at that point. I said all that to say we never focused on eye insurance. I’m the only one in the house with vision problems at the moment, so the plan is more for me than anyone else. So, somehow it got overlooked in our discussion and now I’m left to wonder if the re-enrollment period caused the confusion or maybe my mommy brain thinks I got new glasses in 2012, but I really got them in 2013.

Oh and guess who was told to purchase reading glasses to wear OVER her contacts while working? Yea… this girl… *sigh*

My husband's glasses are for fashion purposes only... lucky him...

Moral of the Story: Check your health insurance benefits regularly, so you know exactly what to expect (or fight for) during doctor’s visits. Read through the benefit options carefully to and make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Did you know that four in 10 (42%) workers waste up to $750 each year on mistakes with their insurance benefits?

Do you have insurance? If not, head over to Aflac’s site and check out their open enrollment information: http://afl.ac/BH6ZR
