Black Historical Romance Novels To Get Lost In This Year

by Danielle S

Happy Valentine’s Day!!! This Black History Month I’m really focusing on sharing reading suggestions that are more unexpected, and that you can enjoy all year long.

In my last list, we focused on young adult historical novels. This list will focus on historical romance novels that showcase Black love in the best and worse of times.

I absolutely cannot create a Black historical romance novels list without including Beverly Jenkins. If you’ve been a Mamademics reader for years, you know that she was featured in my Black women writers you should know Black History month series a few years ago.

If you’re just getting started with historical romance novels, I recommend starting with one of her trilogies, I’m currently rereading the Destiny series but also highly recommend The Old West series.

Set in 19th-century California, the Destiny trilogy is a satisfying mix of adventure and passion that follows three brothers who stumble on love.

Already read those? Go ahead and pre-order the first novel in her Women Who Dare series set to publish May 2019. Rebel is set in post-Civil War New Orleans and if the cover is any indication, it’s going to be a steamy read for sure.

While I absolutely love reading about books set in America, I want to challenge myself this year, so I’ve added the Men of Valor series to my “to read” list. A trilogy of romance novels set in Africa by an author with really great reviews.

If you’re looking for shorter reads, Alyssa Cole’s novellas are perfect. I’ve recently been reading her contemporary Reluctant Royals series, but Be Not Afraid is on my list of books to read this month as well. Set in 1776, it looks like the love story from the American Revolution that we didn’t even know we needed.

Do you read romance novels? Who are your favorite authors?
