Communication: Baby Sign Language

One of the hardest parts of being a mom in my opinion, is the constant “what’s wrong?” guessing game. Babies/toddlers can’t talk and figuring out what each cry means can be a bit overwhelming at least for me. Around five or six months we started practicing baby sign language with Sesame. We really focused on the sign for “milk” because that’s really all he ever seemed to want.

Yesterday we went to lunch with my sister-in-law and it was so amazing to watch him communicate what he wanted. He kept signing “eat” and “more.” It was adorable to watch, but it also reminded me how hard it was before we started teaching him to communicate.

While I’m enjoying him attempting to talk, I know that it will be awhile before his speech is clear and this is a good way to communicate. I think the next signs we’ll focus on are “please,” “thank you,” and “potty.”

Does your baby sign? What’s their favorite sign right now?
