If I Wasn't A Writer, I'd Be An Artist...
I LOVE crafting almost as much as I love writing. Honestly, lately, I’ve loved it more than writing. Crafting is my anti-drug. It’s a chance to make something with my hands and relax while being creative. I don’t have to worry about my grammar or people being upset because my very truthful words hurt their feelings.
If you’ve followed Mamademics from the beginning then you know my love of crafting started when Sesame was about 8 months old. I decided to teach myself how to crochet, well actually, I was reteaching myself. My mom’s best friend taught me a few stitches when I was in high school to help me relax when I felt anxious. I did it for a while but I didn’t know that you could make more than blankets with one stitch so I got bored. Fast forward about 10 years and I came across crochet projects while browsing Pinterest.
I decided that I could totally make myself a scarf, so I had Mr. S. take me to Michaels to get the supplies I needed and got started. I’d love to say that the first scarf turned out beautifully but it didn’t. I didn’t understand different weight yarns so it was a bit of mess but I think Mr. S. knew I desperately needed to do something other than taking care of the baby while studying for my doctoral exams, so he encouraged me to keep trying.
After more research, another visit to the craft store, and many stops and restarts, I finally made a hat that I felt comfortable letting Sesame wear out of the house.
Shortly after I started making headbands and opened an Etsy shop. Over the next few years, the Etsy shop really grew but then I really got into my writing and social justice work, so I didn’t have as much time for it. I still get custom orders here and there from my super loyal customers but I haven’t done a full-out store inventory in a long time.
I miss it.
After having Sidney, I found myself once again needing to do something to keep myself busy. I tried crocheting but that is super hard to do with such a demanding newborn, so I needed something else.
When he was about 8 months, I learned about bullet journaling, which led me down the rabbit hole of watercolor painting and hand lettering. It’s something that I can start and stop without becoming frustrated if I’m interrupted and it is also incredibly relaxing.
Crafting has helped me get through some of the hardest moments of my life. It’s given me a way to relax that still makes me feel productive, which is something I desperately need.
If I could go back in time, I’d have double majored in English and something in the fine arts. One day I hope to bridge my love for both by opening a coffee shop bookstore with space for crafting classes.
In the meantime, I’ll keep teaching myself how to make something beautiful out of the simplest materials.
Do you craft? Would you like to see me share more about my crafting projects?
