Reading is Fundamental…

Spread the love

A small portion of our son’s library

I’m an avid reader, which I’m sure is no surprise because I’m working on my PhD in English. As a child, I loved getting new books and going to the library, and I want to instill my love for reading in Baby S. We started reading to Baby S while he was in the womb. Special Note: Don’t try to read the original fairytales because they will have you laughing uncontrollably, or maybe that was just me when I was pregnant.  It was so cool to feel him move all around when we read to him and he really responded to Green Eggs and Ham. I even took it to the hospital in my bag, so we could read to him once he was born. I can’t remember if we read it to him at the hospital, but it’s one of the books he loves to hear now.

In lieu of cards at the baby shower we asked people to purchase their favorite children’s book and write a message for him. Most of the people who attended the shower honored our request and of course my “nerdy” friends from school gave him tons of books as gifts. Couple that with me slowly adding to his collection and one of his grandmothers sending at least one new book with every package she sends and his library is pretty impressive.

Since he has so many books, I try to rotate them every month. I choose three or four books and we read them over the course of four weeks. The only exception to that is the book he’s holding in the picture. That book sits on the nightstand in our bedroom and when he’s having trouble falling asleep he reaches for it, so we read it to him. Sometimes I try to theme the books and since it’s fall and almost time for Thanksgiving I picked him up a few new books at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

That’s When I’m Happy seems to be his favorite at the moment. He giggle, makes noises, and kicks his legs while I read to him. He also really likes Feast of 10 a recommendation from a family friend and Mamademics reader. I know some people only read as part of the bedtime routine, but I read to him randomly throughout the day. It’s a great way to help him relax or just when he wants to cuddle next to me. I also like to use it as a break from doing work during the day, so he know I’ll spend some time with him even if I’m busy.

When did you start reading to your little one? Do you rotate books by the season? How do you choose which ones to read?
